Yoga has been one of my biggest passions since early adulthood and my, how this journey has grown and changed over time! As an 18 year old high school graduate, I wanted to improve my physical fitness but never played sports and did not feel like I belonged in the gym setting. Yoga seemed like a great way to improve my strength and flexibility without the competition that other sports involved. I soon discovered that yoga allowed me to compete with myself, bettering myself each time I rolled out my mat.
In college, I took the next step in my yoga journey and enrolled in a 3 credit hour yoga class at Eastern Kentucky University. The instructor was owner of The Om Place and I was enamored with her and her knowledge of the history and philosophy of yoga. This experience fueled me to continue my journey in class settings and my home-based practice.
My relationship with yoga continued to help me be more stable and content when the world presented obstacles to me in my personal and professional life. This was especially true as I attempted work/life balance during graduate school as I got married and gained a young son in the process. I was so invested in the power of yoga that it was the basis of my dissertation which examined how it affected elementary students’ ability to focus and sustain attention in school. I realized during my analysis that being exposed to traumatic experiences mediated the impact that yoga had on students, and that these two passions of yoga and trauma treatment could be a parallel path to healing if integrated on and off the mat.
The most recent stepping stone on my yoga journey came to me during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Being isolated while working from home due to the closures of schools, I saw an opportunity to work more on my well-being by taking a deep dive into my personal self-care. In addition to many forms of wellness, I began a daily yoga practice that helped me have a positive attitude of gratitude most days during one of the most difficult times of all of our lives. I also decided to make a virtual gratitude visit to my first and most influential yoga teacher. I had always wanted to become a trained yoga instructor but made excuses that it was not the right time or it was too expensive at the moment. While planning my gratitude visit, I realized the best way I could use my COVID-19 stimulus payments was to commit to this training at The Om Place, thus use that funding to help share the healing power of yoga with others.
During yoga teacher training, I realized that the philosophical and spiritual aspects of the practice was what I was seeking to better myself and further help others. By combining the eight limbs of yoga, yamas and niyamas, and trauma informed care approach to teaching yoga, I have reached a level of santosha or contentment with helping others become more self-aware of their needs as a form of healing.
When you join me on the mat for a group class or a personal session, I make a promise to never push you to a place you do not want to be. I will always invite you to explore and try new things, with the option of choosing what feels right for you. My goal in leading you in yoga is to increase self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-care. If this sounds like a journey you would like to explore, please see the Barefoot Works and Mind Body App links above or complete the contact form.
Until then, Namaste.
